Understanding CGPA Calculation
The Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is a standardized way to measure academic performance across different courses or modules. While the grading scales may differ between institutions, the formula for calculating CGPA remains consistent.
CGPA Formula
The CGPA is calculated by taking the sum of the product of the grade points and the module credits for all modules, and then dividing by the total number of module credits.
CGPA = Σ(Grade Point × Module Credit) ÷ Σ(Module Credit)
Example Calculation
Module | Credits | Grade | Grade Point | Grade Point × Credits |
---|---|---|---|---|
Module 1 | 4 | A | 4.0 | 16.0 |
Module 2 | 3 | B+ | 3.5 | 10.5 |
Module 3 | 4 | B | 3.0 | 12.0 |
Total | 11 | 38.5 |
CGPA = 38.5 ÷ 11 = 3.50
Note that different institutions may use different grading scales (e.g., 4-point, 5-point), but the formula remains the same. Always refer to your specific institution's grading system for accurate calculations.
